Two students of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Gombe have been feared shot dead by security operatives during a violent protest over lack of water, power and other facilities

A combined team of men of the Nigerian Police and Nigerian Army were called up to contain the protest before the sad incident which resulted in sporadic gunshots.

The breakdown of law and order during the protest made the authorities of the school to immediately closed it on Friday morning to stop further breach of orderliness.

The school authorities had given the students an ultimatum to vacate the school premises at the outbreak of the protest.

They equally called out armed regular and mobile policemen to enforce law and order.

An unconfirmed report from some of the students has it that two students were shot when police and soldiers shot sporadically to scare away the students.

A student who would not want her name in print said the trouble started around 8:00 pm on Thursday when the students started the protest over the school authorities’ inability to provide water and light, a situation that had rendered the students in a helpless situation for quite some time now.

But speaking to newsmen over the incident, the Gombe State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Usman (DSP), said around 10:00 pm on Thursday, the DPO in charge of Gombe Division, DSP Nyako Musa, received a distressed call after which he took a team of Policemen to the school and found students destroying facilities and threatening to go to the houses of the Provost, Dr. Abbas Gimba and the school Registrar in Shongo area.

He said reports also had it that the students accomplished their threats by destroying some lightening equipment in the house of the Provost.

He added: “As if that was not enough, another reinforcement came and dispersed the students but some of the students mobilized themselves and started attacking commuters outside the school main gate.

According to him, a number of the students were arrested and undergoing screening after men of the 301 Artillery Regiment of the Nigeria Army assisted the Police in calming the situation.

He said, “We gathered that the reason for the rampage is water scarcity which the students had been complaining to the school authorities. The students refused to listen to the authorities and decided to take the laws into their hands”.
