The authority of Ughelli South Local Government Council in Delta State has waded into the feud between cattle rearers and host communities, and constituted committees for peaceful co-existence.
The council’s Chairman, Dr. Richard Kofi, who confirmed this to journalists on Monday, said the activities of herdsmen and other criminals hiding under the guise of herdsmen to create criminalities, were fast becoming worrisome; a situation that had also created sleepless nights for the people of Ughelli South.
He said that the taskforce on promoting peaceful co-existence among cattle rearers, farmers, and host communities in Ughelli South, would serve as primary responsibility of government to protect the lives, and properties including maintaining laws, and order in the state.
Dr. Kofi maintained that herdsmen in their private businesses like every other business man, and their business should not inhibit the transactions of other persons, hence they must operate within the ambit of the law for peaceful and harmonious relationship in the council area.
He said that any herdsman carrying arms will be regarded as criminal, and will be handed over to relevant authorities, and called on the committee members at the council, government level and vigilante chairmen of all the six clans to inaugurate the taskforce in their various communities for proper monitoring of the activities of the herdsmen.
The 17-man committee was charged with the responsibility to stem the tide of herdsmen’s invasion of communities in Ughelli South, be proactive in curbing the grazing activities of suspected Fulani herdsmen, provide conducive atmosphere for good relationship between herdsmen, and provide inclusive participation of various interest groups in conflict management.
The committee was also mandated to properly designate the right compensation for the herdsmen and farmer, including appropriate recommendation to government on herdsmen/farmers activities where neccesary.
