There was pandemonium in some parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State as heavy gunshots were heard at night sending fears to many that the town may have been attacked by the Boko Haram terrorist group.
The gunshots was heard around the Maimalari barrack in the heart of the town and this gave the impressive to the residents of the town that perhaps the military was engaged the insurgents in a gun battle.
A resident, Abba Yunus of that axis of the town who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday morning said, “because the gunshots went on for about 30 minutes, we thought that the town was under attack.
” We even thought that the insurgents were attempting to take over the Maimalari barrack and that the military was repelling them off with the gunshots.”
Investigations revealed that the soldiers were actually shooting to scare off the insurgents who were on the prowl at a community, Bale Mammanti in the outskirts of the town.
It was gathered that the members of the terrorist group had attack the community on Tuesday evening, killing six persons and abducting four women.
Modu Kakami, a member of a youth vigilance group told our correspondent on Wednesday that “the militants stormed the village of Bale Mammanti, outskirts of Maiduguri last night in Jere local government area of Borno state, killings six civilians as well as abducting four women.”
A resident of the community that fled into Maiduguri, Ibrahim Kyari told our correspondent that Boko Haram came at 6:30pm killed at least six civilians and abducted four women.
He said: “We fled into bushes last night because we knew that we are the target but this morning we discovered that all our cattle, rams and foodstuffs were carted away.”
He explained that among the six persons killed by the insurgents were four men and two children.
