Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, said on Friday that the Anti-Cult Unit of the command had deployed policemen to Ahoada Division Area Command to check cult clashes.
Ogunsakin told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the deployment followed reported cult clashes in some communities in neighbouring Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas.
He said nine people were killed by the rival cult gangs on July 31.
NAN reports that residents of Obagi, Obieze, Obimiri, Ede, Obite and Akabuka, in the affected local government areas, had complained of cult clashes and sporadic shooting in their communities.
Ogunsakin said the police was still carrying out investigations to ascertain if there were other fatalities as a result of the clash.
According to him, the command has not made any arrest yet.
The commissioner said that the command had directed its Anti-Kidnap Unit to swing into action and ensure that normalcy returned to the affected communities.
