Hell was let lose as three pregnant women and a Jeep driver were on Sunday night killed in a motor accident along Ughelli Asaba road, by Nsukwa community Junction, while six others sustained injuries.
An eye witness, John Osakwe, told our reporter that the accident was caused by the Jeep driver trying to overtake a 911 lorry as both were heading towards Warri.
He also said: “The Jeep driver was on high speed, and was trying to over take the 911 lorry when both collided on same side, unfortunately a bus conveying the victims, many of them, staff of Ogwashi Uku General Hospital, rammed into them, and as result of the deplorable condition of the road, the bus driver could not veer out of the trap, and on the spot, three of its occupants, pregnant women perished, and six others sustained fatal injuries. ”
It was gathered that the victims were on their way home from a burial ceremony of one of their colleagues along Asaba-Ughelli road when the unexpected happened.
Investigation revealed that the driver of the Jeep died in the early hours of on Monday at FMC, Asba after a long battle with severe injuries sustained on his head, while the three pregnant women died of bleeding on the spot, and their remains were deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Ogwashi-Uku.
One of the victims, Josephine Odor, a staff of the state hospital management Board who survived, told Our reporter ” those of us who survived was just the sake of God, I can’t explain, all I know is that we were coming from a burial ceremony of one of our own, and it was already late night, and the road is bad, God survived us”
Further investigation revealed that Ughelli Asaba Ogwashi Uku road had remained a death trap for motorists, and had recorded over 20 deaths in the past three months.
With fierce pot holes, unsuspecting motorists in most cases during night fall fall into them, and either their vehicles damaged, or passengers killed
But the state commissioner for works, Chief James Augoye, who spoke to our reporter said: “the state government at present is probing the contractor who abandoned the Job, it was awarded by the state government to a contracting firm which I don’t want to mention,it abandoned it after collecting huge sums of money, the matter is in court, hence the road is still deplorable even though is a federal road”.
But in a reaction, the state commander federal road Safety Corps, (FRSC),Mr, Random Kulven, who confirmed the incident, said “three pregnant women, and the driver of the Jeep died, while others sustained injuries, the accident was caused by over speeding, we are still investigating the incident and the corpses deposited at the Mortuary”
