At least eight commuters were killed yesterday along Gamboru Ngala, Dikwa road after driving over a planted improvised explosive device (IED) while traveling to Maiduguri, Borno State, North-east Nigeria.
The commuters mostly Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members drove over the IED planted secretly by suspected insurgents were sent to their great beyond according a CJTF source.
The explosion ripped through the blue Hilux vehicle carrying the CJTF members and others killing all of them at Gajibo almost 90km from maiduguri.
A source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed that five CJTF members, one vigilante, and three civilians were killed in the unfortunate attack along the highway.
Another source said the CJTF Commander of Gamboru Ngala Tejani Mala confirmed the incident to reporters in Maiduguri, adding that his younger brother was one of those who lost his life in the unfortunate incident.
‘Our men were on their way from Gamboru Ngala to Maiduguri when they unknowingly detonated the planted bomb at Gajibo,’ he added.
‘The blast claimed the lives of a total of nine people as at today, with two others in the vehicle sustaining injuries,’ he revealed.
“This attack again underscores the continuous threat posed by the insurgent Boko Haram which has killed over 300,000 people in Borno State within the last 15 years.
This terrorist group has been responsible for numerous acts of violence in Borno and within the region in almost two decades of torments.
The military could not be reached on this incident.
