Despite the uproar that greeted the killing of Christian student Deborah Samuel in Sokoto over alleged blasphemy, a yet to be identified man has been burnt alive in Abuja over alleged blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
The latest incident took place on Saturday at the popular Timber Market in the Federal Housing Authority, Lugbe area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The deceased, said to be an artisan from one of the Northern states, was accused of blaspheming Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
According to reports, his accusers first gorged out the man’s eyes in one of the security posts in Timber Market where he was locked up, then stoned and immediately set him ablaze.
A stampede broke out as traders, artisans, motorists and passersby ran helter-skelter for their lives following the brutal killing of the young man.
Policemen from Lugbe station arrived the scene and fired gunshots into the air for more than 40 minutes to disperse the hoodlums but it was too late to rescue to victim.
The authorities are yet to react to the incident which happened at the nation’s seat of power, barely weeks after the lynching and burning of Deborah by Muslim fanatics of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, over alleged blasphemy.
Deborah’s alleged killers – her schoolmates – have been charged for “criminal conspiracy and inciting violence”, rather than murder – a development which has been widely condemned by many.
