The Niger Republic led military junta has severed ties with the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) after all efforts of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led African States’ to resolve the ongoing impasse failed.
Recall that Tinubu on Thursday sent a high-powered delegation to Niger to meet with the coup leaders, after ECOWAS had issued a seven-day ultimatum for the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to avoid possible clash with the junta.
The delegation led by former Nigerian Military ruler, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) met with representatives of the junta, where Niger severed ties with Nigeria, Togo, France, its coloniser, and the United States after peace talks failed.
“The functions of the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors of the Republic of Niger to France, Nigeria, Togo and the United States are terminated,” Radio France International quoted one of the putschists to have said on national television.
