The Northern Senators’ Forum (NSF)has urged the Federal Government to promptly intervene to restore electricity supply in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.
Chairman of NSF, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Friday.
Yar’Adua decried the dire situation of electricity supply in the region, saying. that the power outages was occasioned by vandalism and national grid disturbances.
He said the situation had brought economic hardship, compromised healthcare delivery, and resulting in further expensive fuel costs on citizens.
He said small businesses were struggling to operate, while hospitals were experiencing increased running costs, nothing that the issue had impacted livelihoods .
He said the NSF acknowledges the progress made in power distribution under the current administration and appreciates efforts to improve the sector.
He, however, said the situation demands urgent attention to alleviate the suffering of constituents and revitalise economic activities.
“The northern senators forum respectfully requests the Federal Government to expedite repairs, prioritize repairs on the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines to restore reliable power supply.
“Enhance security, implement measures to prevent future vandalism and protect power infrastructure.”
He called for support to Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) initiatives on renewable energy and mini grid solutions to provide sustainable power options.
