The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has welcomed the court judgment stopping the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from holding its national convention, describing it as a move that brings down impunity.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday restrained the planned 2025 National Convention of the PDP until the party complies with the statutory requirements of its constitution and the Electoral Act.

The judge, while delivering judgment in a suit filed by three aggrieved members of the party, also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from accepting or recognising the outcome of any national convention of the party conducted without due process and compliance with its own guidelines and regulations.

Reacting to the ruling while addressing some concerned PDP stakeholders from 12 states of the federation, including the FCT, Wike said that while the verdict stands as one of the happiest days of his life, it is also the saddest because of the disarray within the party.

“We are happy that we have fought impunity while on another part we are not happy with what is going on in the party.
“It’s unfortunate that the so-called purported national convention cannot hold, it has never been bad like this in the Peoples Democratic Party,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor added that leadership is very important, and when certain people become arrogant and fail to recognise the sacrifices of some party stakeholders, it is only a matter of time before reactions arise.

He urged the stakeholders not to relent in their efforts to stand by the truth.
