Senate Rejects Motion to Investigate PFIPC Budget Allocation

The Senate on Wednesday rejected a motion seeking an investigation into the controversial budgetary allocation to the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), opting instead to await the outcome of the ongoing probe ordered by President Bola Tinubu.

The motion, sponsored by Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila, sought a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the inclusion of the PFIPC in the 2026 Appropriation Act and the approval of a budgetary allocation of about N1.3 billion for the entity.

While presenting the motion during plenary, Sumaila argued that the controversy had raised concerns over the credibility of the National Assembly’s budget process and called for a legislative probe to determine how the allocation was approved.

However, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, ruled that the Senate should not proceed with a separate investigation, noting that President Tinubu had already directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the matter.
