Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the reported deployment of security personnel to protect his campaign billboards, questioning the administration’s claim of enjoying widespread public support.
Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, made the remarks amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general election.
The criticism centres on reports that police officers were deployed to guard Tinubu’s campaign billboards against vandalism, raising questions about the use of security personnel for political purposes.
Atiku questioned why campaign billboards required security protection if, as claimed by the president’s supporters, Nigerians widely supported Tinubu.
The former vice-president has repeatedly faulted the Tinubu administration over insecurity, economic hardship and the rising cost of living, arguing that the government should prioritise protecting citizens and improving their welfare.
He has also accused the administration of failing to provide adequate answers to Nigerians struggling with food prices, transportation costs and insecurity.
Atiku’s criticism comes as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
The former vice-president is expected to challenge Tinubu’s record in office as the opposition seeks to present an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The reported deployment of officers to protect the billboards has also drawn criticism from opposition figures, who argue that security personnel should focus on protecting lives and property rather than safeguarding political campaign materials.
