The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a politician whose promises cannot be trusted.
Wike spoke on Tuesday during the unveiling of candidates backed by the Rainbow Coalition in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The minister recalled his involvement in Atiku’s political campaigns, claiming that he was one of the former vice president’s biggest financial supporters during the 2019 general election.
He also said he contested against Atiku during the 2022 presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party, which Atiku won.
“I pray you never know him. He’s not a man whose word you can take to the bank,” Wike said.
The latest criticism comes amid the prolonged political disagreement between the two politicians following the PDP presidential primary in 2022.
Wike, who had sought the party’s presidential ticket, fell out with Atiku after losing the contest. The disagreement deepened ahead of the 2023 general election, when Wike refused to support Atiku’s presidential ambition and backed President Bola Tinubu, the eventual winner of the election.
The FCT minister’s latest remarks came as political alignments continue to take shape ahead of the 2027 general election.
