Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won re-election to the United States House of Representatives, retaining her seat in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
Omar’s victory comes amid renewed attacks by President Donald Trump, who had called for her resignation from Congress over allegations of identity fraud.
Trump recently revived the allegations following a court filing that identified the Minnesota politician by an additional name.
However, Omar secured another term in the House despite the controversy.
Her re-election comes as Democrats have taken control of both chambers of the US Congress following significant gains in Tuesday’s elections.
Al Jazeera reports that Democrats have secured 51 seats in the Senate, wresting control of the chamber from Republicans.
The party also recorded victories in traditionally Republican-leaning states, including Texas, South Carolina, Iowa and Kansas.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats are projected to win at least 235 seats, surpassing the 218 required for a majority, according to CNBC’s Election Desk.
The Democratic gains represent a major setback for Trump and the Republican Party, which had controlled both chambers of Congress.
