Dr Aisha Mohammed, wife of Bauchi State governor, has opened adult literacy classes in Alkaleri Local Government to offer girls in the area an opportunity to acquire basic education.

Mohammed, at a ceremony to mark this year’s International Day for Girl Child on Sunday in Bauchi, promised to enroll and retain girls in the schools.

She challenged girls and women to champion the quest for basic education so as to improve the quality of their lives, urging those in Adamawa, Bauchi, Yobe and Niger to take advantage of every opportunity to acquire knowledge.

Mohammed warned the girls against remaining silent when in danger, and particularly advised them to report any form of sexual and gender-based violence.

She advised them to acquire basic education so as to prepare for leadership in future and also minimise gender disparity in the society.

“The society will gain more if women are educated. It is in that direction that I established the adult literacy classes. To educate a woman is to educate a nation,” she said.

Earlier, the Education Specialist of UNICEF, Bauchi office, Mrs Mariama Dikwa, had commended the policies of the Bauchi State government on girl-child education.

Ms Asmau Jika, President, Girls for Girls(G4G), an NGO, in a remark, urged the Bauchi governor’s wife to facilitate the domestication of the Child Rights Act in the state.

She also encouraged other governors’ wives to do same in their states.

Jika advised state governments to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics to boost technological growth.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for the 2020 International Day of the Girl Child is “My Voice, Our Equal Future”.

NAN also reports that Bauchi state hosted Adamawa, Yobe and Niger for the 2020 IDGC celebrations.
