A 50-year-old man, Nuru Isah, has been arrested by the police in Bauchi for allegedly killing his 24-year-old second wife, Wasila Abdullahi.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Ahmed Wakil, disclosed this in a press release on Sunday.
Wakil said that on Saturday, the command was alerted to an alleged culpable homicide incident near Government Girls College, Fadamam Mada Area, Bauchi.
According to him, the event arose from a misunderstanding between Isah, a businessman at Central Market Bauchi, and Abdullahi, concerning handling food ingredients and fruits designated for breaking the Ramadan fast, which escalated into a violent confrontation.
The PPRO said, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, Nuru Isah, is accused of using a cane to strike his wife, which resulted in her collapsing and becoming unconscious within their matrimonial residence.
“The victim was subsequently transported to Abubakar Tafawa Belewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH Bauchi, where medical personnel confirmed her death.”
The police spokesman said the Bauchi State Police Command had initiated a thorough investigation into the incident and has apprehended the suspect and recovered the cane used in the assault as an exhibit.
He added that the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the mortuary pending autopsy.
Wakil quoted the State Commissioner of Police, Auwal Muhammad, as assuring the public of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice in the matter.
The commissioner reminded the “public that domestic violence constitutes a serious offence with potentially devastating repercussions”.
He restated the command’s “unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens while ensuring that offenders of criminal activities are held accountable”.
