Benue Bloodshed A National Disgrace, Says Labour Party

The Labour Party has condemned the recent mass killings in Benue State, calling for the immediate deployment of security personnel to protect vulnerable communities across Nigeria’s North Central region.

Describing the attacks as “a fresh wave of senseless killings,” the party’s National Caretaker Committee, chaired by Senator Nenadi Usman, urged a full-scale investigation and swift prosecution of the perpetrators, regardless of status or affiliation.

In a statement issued on Monday, Usman expressed deep sorrow over the killing of more than 100 people, including women, children, displaced persons, and security operatives, as well as the destruction of homes and livelihoods.

“These were not mere numbers. They were human beings, innocent lives ended brutally,”

“Children who deserved safety were slaughtered. Mothers who should be nurturing families were buried in mass graves. Fathers who tried to defend their homes were cut down without mercy,” she said.
The LP leader lamented the unrelenting violence, pointing to the torching of homes, ambushes on security personnel, and repeated assaults on displaced persons as grim evidence of the state’s failure to protect its citizens.

“This bloodshed in Benue should rattle every conscience.

“It’s more than a regional crisis; it’s a national disgrace. The boldness of the attackers and the vulnerability of the victims reveal a troubling vacuum in leadership and accountability,” Usman stated.
Beyond military intervention, the party called for a coordinated humanitarian response, including food supplies, shelter, medical assistance, and trauma support for survivors.

Usman urged Nigerians to move beyond “routine condemnations” and demand real action, stressing that silence and indifference only embolden violent actors.

“To the grieving families, I mourn with you as a mother.

“To the orphaned children, the widowed women, and the devastated communities, your cries are heard. Your pain resonates nationwide, and your demand for justice must not be ignored,” she added.
She reaffirmed the Labour Party’s commitment to pushing for policies that prioritize the safety and dignity of all Nigerians, particularly those in rural and conflict-ridden areas.

“Nigeria cannot continue like this,” Usman lamented.
