Mohammed Alkali Imam, a staff of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) who was abducted by Boko Haram on the 10th of March this year has been freed by his captors.

This was confirmed by the acting secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) Mallam, Ali Chiroma, who said he was still being debriefed by security operatives.

“Apart from the normal fatigue due to long stay of abductees in the Savannah he looked healthy and would soon be allowed to join his family,” said Chiroma.

Mohammed Imam was abducted by Boko Haram in Monguno in the dead of night in March when the insurgents disguised to beat security, stormed his residence and took him away with them to an unknown destination.

While in the captivity of the insurgents, heavy pressure was mounted on the government and his employers the ICR to get Imam a former practicing journalist to be released while heavy negotiations with the Boko Haram went on.

The entire humanitarian community and the NUJ have welcome the development which has ginger the mood of all the entire state.

Several humanitarian workers have died in captivity since the beginning of the 13 year-old war in North East Nigeria.
