The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has commended the initiative of the 107 Division Equipment Support of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri for fabricating mine resistant vehicles.
Buratai made the commendation on Monday while launching Operation Sahel Sanity, an army operation aimed at complete elimination of armed bandits in the North West and North Central regions of the country.
The army chief who commissioned 10 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles which materials were locally sourced in Borno and jointly constructed by soldiers and civilians, noted that the development would now be saving a lot of resources for the country.
“The fabrication of the MRAP vehicles was borne out of the necessity for us to look inwards because we have suffered in the past in securing military vehicles from abroad which was cumbersome and costly.
“With this initiative however, we are surely going to save a lot of resources to do other things,” he stated.
The COAS commended the Maiduguri theater commanders for the initiative and directed the 107 Division to immediately construct 20 additional MRAP vehicles to add to existing ones, to boost fight against terrorism.
He said the ongoing Exercise Sahel Sanity which commenced on July 6, would last until Sept. 6, would concentrate on fighting bandits in Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna and Niger states and environs.
Earlier, the Commandant of the 107 Division Equipment Support, Brig. Gen. B. I. Alaya informed the COAS that the vehicles had the capacity of carrying two drivers, one gunner and 10 fully fitted troops.
Gen. Alaya said the vehicles which run on a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour, were the third set locally fabricated by the division.
While at the District Head of Faskari’s palace, Gen. Buratai assured that the army would not fail President Muhammadu Buhari in weeding out all criminal elements in the country.
The District Head, Alhaji Aminu Tukur thanked the military for the return of peace to his domain.
