The Delta State Government has called on Nigerians to rise above political, ethnic and ideological differences and embrace collective responsibility in the fight against insecurity.
It stressed that intelligence sharing, citizen vigilance and constructive engagement remain critical to defeating terrorism and criminality in the country.
Secretary to the Delta State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, made the call on Wednesday while receiving members of a Non-Governmental Organisation, United for Good Governance and Better Life, who embarked on a peaceful advocacy campaign to Government House, Asaba, as part of efforts by the NGO to promote collective action for improved governance, enhanced security and a safer, more prosperous society in Nigeria.
Commending the group led by Mr. Ezeli Tony for its peaceful advocacy and commitment to national development, the SSG described security as a universal concern that affects every Nigerian, irrespective of social standing, economic status or political affiliation.
He noted that the growing security challenges confronting the nation require the active participation of all citizens, adding that government and security agencies cannot succeed alone without the cooperation and support of the people.
Emu particularly charged youths and communities to embrace the principle of “if you see something, say something,” emphasising that timely information and responsible whistleblowing could prevent attacks, expose criminal networks and save countless lives.
He said; “Security is everybody’s responsibility. You do not need to carry a gun to contribute to security. A single act of whistleblowing can save lives.
“The people involved in criminal activities are often known by members of their communities, and silence only empowers them”.
The SSG stressed that intelligence gathering should not be viewed as the exclusive preserve of security agencies, but as a collective civic responsibility, noting that communities must take ownership of the safety of their environment.
He commended responsible civil society organisations for complementing government efforts through constructive advocacy, noting that solutions to insecurity must go beyond criticism to include practical recommendations, collaboration and active participation.
Emu reaffirmed that every life matters, whether that of a child, an elderly person, a civilian or a security officer, stressing that the nation must unite against all forms of terror and criminality.
According to him, the loss of personnel of the armed forces, police and other security agencies in the line of duty represents a national tragedy, as behind every fallen officer is a family, a community and loved ones affected by the sacrifice.
He said: “Every life matters. It does not matter whether the person is two years old or seventy years old, a civilian or a soldier. The pain of loss affects us all. This is why we must unite against terror.
“Anyone who has a genuine plan for Nigeria must make security a priority. It is not enough to criticise government or security agencies; we must bring forward workable solutions and support measures that can improve the situation.”
Emu disclosed that the Delta State Government was already taking proactive steps towards strengthening security collaboration through a state-wide security summit designed to bring together all critical stakeholders.
He explained that the summit would involve traditional rulers, security agencies, intelligence organisations, ethnic nationality leaders, youth representatives, hunters, forest guards and other relevant groups to collectively examine security challenges and develop sustainable solutions.
He observed that insecurity often escalates during major political seasons, stressing that democracy must not be pursued through violence, bloodshed or actions capable of destabilising the nation.
He assured the organisation of the Delta State Government’s support for initiatives that promote unity, peace and good governance, describing the campaign as timely and consistent with ongoing efforts to foster collaboration in addressing security challenges.
Earlier, leader of the group, Mr. Ezeli Tony, said the organisation has launched a nationwide advocacy campaign, #UnitedAgainstTerrorism, aimed at galvanising Nigerians towards a collective response to the growing threats of kidnapping, banditry and terrorism.
He stated that the campaign, which commenced in Delta State, would extend to other parts of the federation through strategic online engagements and community sensitisation, with a call for stronger collaboration among citizens, government and security agencies to build a safer Nigeria anchored on good governance and improved quality of life.
