The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed grave concern over recent attacks by terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram leading to the death of several citizens and seriously injuring others and damaging properties in the North-eastern part of Nigeria.
According to a press statement obtained by METROWATCH from the regional body’s Headquarters in Abuja, the President of the Commission is particularly saddened by the recent attack and destruction carried out by the sect in Baga town where thousands people are reported dead.
“While strongly condemning these despicable acts and wanton disregard for human life and property, the President on behalf of the ECOWAS Community extends solidarity and heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and sincere condolences to the bereaved families”, the statement read.
The Commission reiterates its commitment to work with the government of Nigeria, member states and all stakeholders to halt these incessant attacks that continue to pose great threats to the peace, security and stability of the region. It also welcomes efforts by the African Union, the Lake Chad Basin Commission and others in this regard.
