Edo State chapter of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, over the suspension of Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Area, Hon. Alhassan Mohammed.
Chairman of the party, Mr. Dan Orbih, in a statement, said the governor ‘s action was reprehensible.

Orbih also said: “Edo State PDP received the announcement of the suspension of Mr. Alhassan Mohammed, Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Area, by the Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomole, with utter disgust.

As usual, the Governor acted ultra vires.
“We recall how he has illegally and single-handedly suspended the Chairmen of Orhionmwon, Owan West LGA’s, and now Etsako West.

“He has once again acted as prosecutor, Judge and Jury in determining the allegations leveled against a suspended Chairman.

“In the full glare of the public, and at the ceremony where he was sworn in as Chairman, and where he was also asked to swear in his Vice Chairman, Mr. Busari Yusuf, who was nominated by the governor, the Chairman’s suspension was announced with immediate effect. In trying to justify the suspension, the governor made an allegation of a petition indicting the Chairman of sponsoring protests against the late former Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Kadiri, who had been incapacitated and who passed on a day after the protest.

“The governor claims he has it on good authority that the suspended chairman, who was the vice chairman at the time, sponsored the said protest and as such he is suspending him and setting up a commission of enquiry to investigate the allegation, even though he, the governor, has already passed judgment.

“We would like to remind the governor that he does not possess the powers to hire and fire elected Council Chairmen as he pleases. The Local Government Councils are a creation of the 1999 Constitution as amended, and the elected Chairmen are not his personal aides. This attitude is also responsible for his misappropriation of council funds over the years, resulting in the inability of councils to pay salaries in the last six months or undertake any meaningful developmental project.

“It is now obvious that the governor instigated the rejection of local government autonomy by the Edo State House of Assembly, so that he can continue to run the third tier of government as his personal fiefdom.
“We hereby advise the governor to immediately recall the suspended council chairman so he can perform the duties for which he was elected.”
