President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the killing of six Nigeriens and Nigerian police officers by bandits in the South East, calling on people of the region to identify and expose those involved.
The President gave the charge in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Saturday.
“Those who know should point at specific people who did this,” President Buhari was quoted as saying by his spokesperson.
The president promised all possible action to conduct a speedy investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
metrowatchonline understands that Buhari’s reaction is on the heels of reports of the killing of six Nigerien citizens and the brutal murder of some policemen at their duty posts in the South East.
In the statement, Buhari urged community and religious leaders “to speak more forcefully against the killings,” “stand up and defend the ethos of our cultural and religious heritage.”
He expressed his administration’s commitment to peace and stability in the South East and the entire country.
According to the President, the reports of killings anywhere were sad and unwelcome.
Buhari offered his condolences to the government and people of Niger Republic whose citizens were “cruelly beheaded” by the attackers.
The president also mourned and extended his condolences to the families of the police officers murdered by the gunmen.
