Many residents of Maiduguri have shunned the wearing of the face and nose masks to go to work or even in large crowds at the post office area, Monday Market or at the ever-expanding GSM Phone Market at Bulunkutu.
A visit to the GSM market Bulunkutu indicated that most of the young
people who gathered in clusters to sell second-hand phones have refused to wear the nose masks due to fatigue or strange beliefs.
Some, who had stolen phones to sell had makeshift nose masks on so that some
legitimacy will be conferred on them by unsuspecting buyers who go to the masses zone where “tokunbo” phones are sold.
Some of them who could afford N50 to buy one but refused told metrowatchonline.com that the coronavirus disease does not exist in Maiduguri and they will never be stampeded to protect themselves even if the state enters a second or third wave as is being witnessed in some South American and Asian countries like Brazil and India.
Brazil has surpassed the 400,000 daily infection rates while India now has an additional complication of lack of gas to treat people on quarantine who also end up perishing.
And that means that many more corpses have to be cremated on a daily
the basis on a first come first serve basis.
As for the residents of Maiduguri, there is the “God factor” which the residents move with and they believe that Nigeria or Borno will never descend to such a low level where the government loses control as it has in Brazil and India and people know that death is behind the door and they actually perish.
Hear them: “Look this is Maiduguri and we are not afraid of corona because we have the sun which is so much that it has been killing our people due to dehydration and exhaustion. That is our strength which is why we are not afraid, we are not in Asia or Europe.
“So if we have up to 48 or 49 degrees celsius of sun daily, who is afraid of corona? We are not afraid of the propaganda of the government because corona will not kill us. They are just crying wolf where there is no rat, so as far as I am concerned I am not afraid”
Said Modu one of the phone technicians.
The government too has not helped matters because most of the health
managers have virtually dropped their guards and do not wear the mast
when going to public places or a public function.
They are only forced to do so when they visit the Emergency health centre where the world health organization WHO officials enforce standards on Damboa road or emergency meetings called for any disease prevailing per unit time.
Some residents even appear at the NUJ press centre for press conferences on Lagos street without their mask on and nothing is being done to force them to comply with the mast campaign or even safe distance sitting position which when violated goes with huge fines in
other climes like India where a new strain B1617 has been killing
people at will.
About 81 new confirmed cases were recorded in Nigeria as of two days
ago while 2,063 deaths have been recorded in 36 states of the federation.
Many residents here in Maiduguri told metrowatchonline.com that they will not take the Jab until their spiritual fathers’ on their religion tells them it’s ok to take it.
They say they will never trust a vaccine made out of the serum of the white man and all that he stands for
