The Commander Sector-2, Operation Hadin Kai, Brigadier-General Adamu Nura, has called on the media in the country to join in the fight against insurgency.
This can be done by deliberately killing the ideology of the terrorists which has sustained them for this long and had assisted in getting new recruits.
General Nura who spoke exclusively with metrowatchonline.com in Damaturu noted that it was not just enough for the fourth estate of the realm to continue watching the military fighting without warring moves by them using their instruments.
To him, the military will continue to fight the war by taking out the insurgent Boko Haram but without killing the ideology that has kept them going on for twelve years would be wasting of time and energy.
General Nura said that drafting the media into the war using their latest technology was the only way the insurgents can be silenced because the entire media in Nigeria is far more than the media strength of Boko Haram online.
“There are lots of things we need to iron out if the media is ready to parley with us. I believe the media should be involved in the creation of a massive counter online force against the insurgents. There are very simple messages which can be passed down to the people through video flicks and cartoons which the media can produce.
” I am talking about deliberate messages created by the media to enlighten both the insurgents and the residents who easily get captivated by the flawed ideologies of the enemy which ordinarily should not hold water but which is having an effect on some young people who can be easily captivated by their cause.
“We should as a matter of fact work together at, whatever you people arrive at, and with the support of management it would be used as a long term policy instrument in case this kind of war rears its head in the future.” Said the General.
General Nura noted that it is high time the media stops seeing itself as detached from the war being waged by people he described as criminal elements against the state be they insurgents or bandits using kinetic power, fear and publicity to scare the people.
He believes that gone are the days when the media or Nigerians would prefer to extricate themselves from the non-kinetic warfare which to him is a comprehensive operational concept that is applied in interlaced, overlapping and integrated Spectrum, Information Space to enable the achievement of non-kinetic environment superiority.
Nura said that non kinetic weapon is very powerful and useful against insurgents which is why unless media practitioners begin to use it, they may not know the weight of its strength against the criminal elements fighting the state and its people from the lake Chad region and the Sambisa forest.
WHY THE FREQUENT ATTACKS ON BABANGIDA
On why Babangida community, about 50km north of Damaturu has been constantly attacked, he said that its purely for economic reasons and the stealing of the food of the residents of the area and not because they wish to get at Damaturu the capital ” which cannot happen under my watch.
” i think its because they have this assertion that they can get free food from the supplies of the people. Food is being distributed to each house hold in that community. In fact from our investigation, they even fake being internally displaced people IDPs and come into the community to get reliefs and handouts from residents.”
The General however regretted that almost all the routes into and out of Babangida are porous and susceptible to attacks which explains the frequency but he has been able to talk to the Bulama’s and virtually dragged them into the fight against the common enemy and warning them against connivance which is a grievious offense.
He said that a joint campaign with the para military is making them succeed as a team which is why Geidam and surrounding porous areas have been well fortified now against the terrorists.
GAIDAM, FISHING TRADE, OF INSURGENTS AND SOLDIERS
Speaking on the fishing trade going in in Geidam, the sector 2 Commander noted that “there is so much going on in that axis which needs correcting adding that his men recently seized a number of vehicles with fish, over 2000 cartoons or so which is why the insurgents attacked Geidam in revenge.
” On the allegation of soldiers fishing you mentioned, I don’t have any evidence that soldiers are involved in the fishing trade for now, but i assure you that if we have one grain of evidence, we will surely work on it and stop such illegalities.
” Indeed there are bad eggs everywhere and in every profession but we are trying our best to be as professional as possible as enshrined in the marching orders we have from the Chief of the Army staff General Farouk Yahaya. Our joint patrol with other services is paying up and we have no reason not to nab any criminal that falls into our trap. It’s our job and the people should count on us.
Geidam is the only town in Yobe with a powerful international market were foreign currencies can buy and sell and that is why fish and fuel is being smuggled from here up to Maigateri in Jigawa state. Smugglers are quite a bunch and very powerful on the road and they have been handled accordingly.
“This is another area i want the media to come in and collaborate with us in exposing these criminals where ever you see them ” Said Nura.
For the war to end the sector two commander said that he wants all the stake holders who are revered and respected in the society like Pastors, Imams and teachers to join in the war against the terrorists whether Boko Haram or ISWAP who he says are not spirits but human beings like all of us.
” “You want to know when this war will end? Well for us to look at this war in the front line and tell you exactly when it will end will be quite difficult to say. However i can tell you straight away that the lake Chad in our backyard here is the meeting point. We should all work together to end it as soon as possible. Everyone has to come together to end this war.” He stressed.
ON ONGOING COURT MARSHALS IN HIS SECTOR
General Nura told metrowatchonline.com that Court Marshal is necessary because of wrong doing in the Army.
The General went on
” It’s a response to wrong doing. When such wrong doings takes place we must correct them. There are some offences according to the law that cannot be dealt with summarily. The whole thing is to serve as a deterrent to others from going against the law. If those criminals come around you and you throw away your rifle and run away, you should be punished for cowardice and that is the law”.
