Italian Aircraft Carrier Arrives Nigeria on Friday, Says Embassy

An  Italian naval group will on Friday  arrive in Lagos  on board an aircraft carrier, Cavour, on a five-day visit.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Embassy of Italy in Abuja and copied to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

The embassy said that the Cavour 550 would be accompanied by frigate, “Bergamin”, logistic support vessel, “Etna” and open-sea patrol vessel “Borsini”.

It said that the commander of the group and the commanding officers of the vessels would pay a courtesy visit to the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Western Naval Command.

The embassy said that they would also make a courtesy call on Oba Rilwanu Akiolu 1 of Lagos.

According to the embassy, the opening ceremony on board the ship would be attended by the Italian  Ambassador to Nigeria, the  Italian consul-general in Nigeria, the FOC and other dignitaries.

It said that the group, in collaboration with the Francesca Rava Foundation, would on Saturday distribute humanitarian aids to people with sight problem.

It added that Archbishop Alfred Adewale -Martins of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos would celebrate a mass on board the ship on Sunday.

It said that there would be an interactive session in the ship to be attended by representatives of Lagos State and federal governments, ltalian entrepreneurs and 40 naval officers.

It added that there would be an art exhibition on the Italian Language and culture.

The embassy also said that there would be a demonstration by the ship, with senior military officers and other guests on board.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Cavour has 13 officers, 67 non-commissioned officers,  44 military men and 38 others on board. (NAN)
