Jibril Aminu, Renowned Academic and Politician, Dies at 85

A native of Song, Adamawa State, Professor Aminu was a brilliant physician and scholar. He graduated top of his class with an M.B.B.S. from the University of Ibadan in 1965, and later earned a Ph.D. in Medicine from London in 1972.

Renowned Nigerian academic, statesman, and diplomat Professor Jibril Muhammad Aminu has passed away today, June 5, 2025, in Abuja, after a prolonged illness. He was 85 years old.

A native of Song, Adamawa State, Professor Aminu was a brilliant physician and scholar. He graduated top of his class with an M.B.B.S. from the University of Ibadan in 1965, and later earned a Ph.D. in Medicine from London in 1972.

His contributions to Nigeria were immense:

Vice-Chancellor, University of Maiduguri (1980-1985).

Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (1975-1979).

Federal Minister of Education.

Minister of Petroleum Resources (1989-1992) and President of OPEC Conference (1991-1992)

Ambassador to the U.S. (1999-2003)

Senator, Adamawa Central (2003-2011)

He was instrumental in founding the Federal Government Academy, Suleja, for gifted children.

His funeral prayer was held at the Abuja National Mosque, and he will be buried in his hometown, Song, Adamawa State.

Professor Aminu is survived by his wife, Fatima Bukar Mulima, and nine children.

A giant of Nigerian education and politics is gone.
