The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident that left a young girl dead and another injured in the Ajegunle area of the state.
The incident occurred on Thursday in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle during a clash between two rival groups, identified as the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys.
The groups were reportedly fighting over toll collection and were armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.
In a statement on Saturday, the police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said Olajide and other officers were deployed to the area following a distress call about the clash.
She said the officer discharged his firearm during the operation, hitting the two girls.
The victims were taken to Ajeromi General Hospital for treatment. One of them, identified as Omole Taiwo, was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where she died.
The second girl is currently receiving medical attention and is said to be in stable condition.
The police command expressed sadness over the death, describing it as the loss of a young and innocent life.
It said Olajide had been disarmed and detained, while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
“The inquiry will establish exactly what happened and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary action. The Command will keep the public informed of its progress,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, also visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assured them that the investigation would be thorough.
The police said any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action.
