The Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Catholic Diocese of Pankshin in Plateau, has raised fund to support the poor and less privileged people in the diocese.

The fund-raising was held at the 2021 Lenten Campaign of the diocese on Sunday in Chip, Pankshin Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking at the event, Most Rev. Michael Gokum, the Bishop of the diocese, said the funds raised would be used to advance the cause of the gospel in rural communities.

Gokum, who called on the wealthy in the society to support the poor, said that “God blesses the hand that gives than the one that receives’’.

The bishop reminded Christians that whatever they had today, came from God, saying that they should endeavour to give back through the less privileged ones in the society.

“We are here today to raise fund to support the poor and the less privileged persons in our diocese and state in general.

“From the little we will gather today, we shall use it to advance the cause of the gospel by giving to those who are suffering.

“All that we have today comes from God, so by giving to the poor, you are in turn giving back to God in appreciation.

“Remember, when you give to those who don’t have, God will be pleased and your reward will be great. By so doing, you are also increasing your treasures in heaven,” he said.

Gokum said the fund raised would be used to support all the needy, devoid of religious and ethnic affiliation.

The bishop also advised Christians to use the Lenten season to pray for prosperous Nigeria and ask God to bring an end to all the security problems facing the country.

Also speaking, Rev. Fr. Basil Kassam, the Coordinator of JDPC, said the organisation, the social arm of the church, had empowered and supported many widows, displaced persons and the poor across the diocese.

He also explained that the organisation had provided boreholes, soft loans to women and peace-building activities across Plateau.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2021 Lenten Campaign Lunch has the theme: “The Role of the Church in Poverty Reduction Amidst the Challenges of COVID-19 Pandemic and Insecurity in Nigeria”.
