A mystery fire has again razed down parts of Gomboru Market in the customs area of Maiduguri the Borno State capital.
Eye witnesses said that the fire which started yesterday night some minutes before 10 PM around “Yan Katako” plank sellers area of the market was about raging to other areas before it was stopped by well meaning residents.
However, many makeshift stores were already gutted by the time the fire service operatives arrived the spot and were swift to put the fire out, after colossal damage had been done to their planks.
The market had a similar disaster last year in which the government promised to help the traders who lost thousands in the same vein.

In a statement from the Commissioner of information and internal security, Prof Usman Tar confirmed that the fire actually took place on Wednesday, 3rd April 2024
at 10 hours, a fire outbreak was reported at the Layin Yan Katako and outer sections of the Gamboru Market in Maiduguri.
“The Borno State Fire Service immediately dispatched a team of fire fighters to the site, and the fire was effectively extinguished. Adjoining sections on the four cardinal points from point of impact were effectively safeguarded from the raging fire.
“No human casualty reported. The security of the market was not at risk of trespass or vandalisation.” said Tar.
“The Borno State Fire Service and SEMA are conducting on-the-spot assessment of the inferno to determine the root cause of the inferno, and steps to avoid future occurrence.
” The Government will take all steps to overcome fire disasters in the state. ” said Tar.
Meanwhile, members of the public are advised to maintain law and order, and ensure the safety of the market is not breached.”
