.The North East Development Commission NEDC has promised to provide more intervention to the Nigeria Police to effectively secure liberated communities in the region.
Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, made the promise while presenting office equipment to the Borno State Police command in Maiduguri today.
The presentation of office equipment to Nigeria Police, is part of the Commission’s intervention to security agencies, in the ongoing disarmament deradicalization and reintegration (DDR) effort in the region devastated by almost 13 years of insurgency.
Alkali said NEDC was providing furniture and office equipment to Borno state Police command to enable its personnel work comfortably.
According to him, the Commission has reconstructed Police barracks destroyed by the insurgents in Garkida town, Adamawa state and also awarded contract for the modernisation of Police stations in Konduga and Bama in Borno state to fast track restoration of civil authority.
The Managing Director promised to consider some of the additional demands forwarded by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Nasir Gwarzo, noted that the Police needed more support from governmental and non governmental organisations to effectively secure the country.
He requested the Commission to support the Police with Intelligence and other operational assets to tackle emerging internal security challenges affecting the country.
Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali represented by Deputy Inspector General in charge of logistics and supply, Zanna Ibrahim, described the intervention as timely and requested the Commission to provide the Force with Armoured Personnel Carriers, operational vehicles and communication gadgets to assist the intelligence strength of the force.
