President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday met behind closed doors with Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the Ogun State governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Adekunle Akinlade, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
A photograph of Buhari, Amosun and Akinlade display 4+4 symbol for the President’s re-election in the February presidential election, has been trending on the social media.
Akinlade, who says he has a 50 years vision for Ogun State, was before moving to APM, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost to Dapo Abiodun, who eventually emerged as the APC Governorship candidate for Ogun State.
Amosun’s relationship with Buhari dates back to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) days In 2007 when the South West progressives wouldn’t have anything to do with him. Amosun was ANPP Ogun candidate then and he worked and campaigned for Buhari though he eventually lost to the PDP.
Recalled that Amosun had on December 24, 2018 led the National Chairman of APM, Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle to the Presidential Villa to submit a letter adopting Buhari as APM’s presidential candidate.
In what appears as an attempt to counter the move by Amosun and Dantalle, a former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, had on December 28th, also led the governorship candidate of APC, Dapo Abiodun to President Buhari at the Villa in Abuja.
After the meeting, pictures of the President lifting the hand of Dapo Abiodun, immediately hit the social media.
Osoba had told State House Correspondents that: “We have come to present our candidate in Ogun state; the candidate of the president; the candidate of APC and the president has raised his hand and told the world that his candidate in Ogun state is Prince Dapo Abiodun and that he has no other candidate, his party in Ogun state is APC, he has no other party in Nigeria other than APC.
“He has assured us that he will personally come to Ogun state to formally present Prince Dapo Abiodun as his candidate and he assured us that is clearing the air of any ambiguity whatsoever of any name dropping, any blackmail, any misinformation that anybody may be peddling, that all elections throughout Nigeria, not just in Ogun state people must vote for APC and no other party.”
According to Amosun, the visit was to wish President Buhari a happy new year and reassure him of APM’s unalloyed support.
When asked his mission to the State House, he said: “It is to come and formally say Happy new year to Mr. President and to reassure him of our unalloyed support .
It is to also tell him that in the coming elections in the contest of South West, Ogun State will not be left behind. We are going to give him massive votes that have never been seen in the history of Ogun State. That is what we are here to reassure him and of course you see the Candidate of APM with me, yes this not the first time we have come to say hello to Mr. President but this is a new year and we just think it would be appropriate, particularly we all know we are working hand in hand with Mr President to make sure that he wins the state. As I said the last time I was here that we are not God but i know that Mr. President has already won the coming election because his work speaks for him.
“Mr. President doesn’t need to still run around his work is everywhere. Infrastructures are now in place and gradually Mr. President is bringing back the middle class, the revolution he is bringing to bear in agriculture, all the social safety nets that he is bringing on board, Npower, GEEP, Market money and many others.
“People that ordinarily have been running around begging for money are now employers of labour themselves and that is the way to go if we must get it right as a nation.
So in all fronts Mr. President has done well, he will still do well and is poised to do more for Nigeria. He came in with what I called a three pronged promises and he has worked his talk despite all odds. Most of the discussions we had even today centred on Nigeria, how he want everything to be done. I was even saying to him that with what you have done you have demostrated that we have turned the bend and very soon we will get there.”
Akinlade on his part described Buhari as a wonderful father.
On his Perception of the President, the APM governorship candidate said, “He is a very wonderful person and someone that I have deep respect for and as a father of the nation, I must say very clearly that I am impressed with what I saw very down to earth human being.”
On what he was taking away, Akinlade said: “For us in Ogun State you are aware that our party the APM adopted him as our Presidential candidate and so what we just tried to do today is to reassure him that what we have done still stands and we are working very hard to make sure that he wins in Ogun state.
And what we taking away is to tell our people that he is doing very well and by God’s grace come February 16 we will vote and he will win that election in sha Allah.”
