Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ondo State Command, has arrested eight suspects in connection with illegal dealings in adulterated diesel in the state.
NSCDC Commandant in the state, Dr Hammed Abodunrin, while parading the suspects, said they were arrested following a tip-off.
Abodurin said that the Anti-vandal Squad of the command mounted surveillance across the waterways in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.
“Based on sustained and credible intelligence, our anti-vandal squad got wind of some the suspects and swung into action through monitoring of waterways for about two weeks.
“However, luck ran out on them, as they were sighted and arrested at Abereke area,” he said.
Abodunrin said that the suspects had confessed to the crime and that they were coming with the product from Delta.
He said that the suspects had further confessed that they were contracted by one Adeyemi Ogunkade who handed over the four boats loaded with diesel to them.
“Three of the boats were conveying 40 drums of 200 litres each, while the fourth boat conveyed 36 drums of 200 litres, all totalling 39,200 litres of suspected adulterated automotive gas oil (diesel),” he said.
The commandant assured that the command, under his watch, would continue to fight vandals and those dealing in illegal petroleum products.
He said that the suspects would be charged to court after thorough investigation.
