The Nigerian Ambassador to the United States of America (USA), Prof. Ade Adefuye said the embassy’s main objective is to ensure early visit of President Barrack Obama to Nigeria.
Adefuye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Washington, USA, on Monday that was committed to ensuring that President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the US was successful.
The ambassador described the relationship between Nigeria and the US as “excellent“ in spite of the fact that Obama’s second visit to some African countries next week would not see him visit Nigeria.
“He is going to Kenya, his ancestral home. If you are in his pace, before you serve eight years in the White House you must pay a visit to your home that is number one.
“Then he is branching to Ethiopia to attend a meeting on Sustainable Development in Africa and he is going to Ethiopia not as a country, but visiting the (African Union) AU Headquarters, that is number two.
“For us in this embassy, we are very happy that President Buhari is coming now. We have made so many efforts to get it done
“But, our ultimate objective is to see President Buhari receives President Obama at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and we are going to get it (done)
“So, Obama still has two years or so. I assure you he is going to come to Nigeria.“
He said the embassy was look forward to stronger bilateral relations between Nigeria and the US in view of the fact that Nigeria remained America’s largest trade partner in Africa.
He said that Nigeria would maintain that position in addition to exploring new areas that would assist Nigeria to diversify its economy by taking advantage of the opportunities inherent in the non-oil sectors such as agriculture, power, solid minerals, and infrastructure.
According to him, the interests of US and that of Nigeria are complementary and that a strong and united Nigeria is an access to the United States.
