Two swindlers, Olaiya Ibeun (26) and a female conspirator, whose name was not given by the police, have been nabbed after they had conned a top aide of the Kogi State governor, Idris Wada.
The aide, Mr. Eric Fiki, had blown the whistle after Ibeun had consistently maligned and insulted him through text messages, with the intent to extort some money from him.
Briefing newsmen, the state commissioner of police, Mr Saidu Madawaki, said the suspect had been maligning and insulting his victims with intent to extort money from them.
Madawaki said Ibeun was arrested with the help of the lady, whose bank account he had used to extort money from one of the victims.
He said the lady was arrested by policemen who had been stationed at one of the commercial banks in Lokoja.
“The lady was arrested by the police while attempting to collect the money for Ibeun, for the second time.
The lady confessed to have been sent by the suspect who was later arrested in Kaduna,”. The commissioner said.
Madawaki said the action followed a report lodged by Fiki who had reported that an unknown person had been sending messages, asking him to send huge sums of money into a bank account.
The police also told newsmen that the suspect had allegedly sent a similar ‘insulting’ text messages to the state deputy governor, Mr. Yomi Awoniyi.
The suspect, who was paraded before newsmen in Lokoja, on Thursday was also accused of sending the same messages to the chairmen of local government councils in the state.
Among the council bosses was that of Mopa-Muro Local Government Area, Mr Funsho Daniyan.
The police commissioner said the suspects would soon be charged to court.
