The House of Representatives on Tuesday condemned the recent attack on the High Court in Port Harcourt, describing it as assault on the judiciary.
This followed a motion under matters of urgent public importance by Rep. Betty Apiafi (Rivers-PDP).
Moving the motion, the lawmaker expressed concern over the invasion of an arm of government, saying it amounted to an assault and contempt of the judiciary.
She described the show of violence carried out by some hoodlums allegedly aided by some security operatives, as an infringement on the Constitution of the country.
Apiafi said that the incident led to the destruction of equipment and furniture, and ransacking of court buildings.
She expressed worry that if nothing was done about it, the country’s democracy could be affected.
The lawmaker, therefore, urged the House to constitute an ad hoc committee to investigate the matter so as to forestall future occurrence.
