Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba has appealed to Cross River Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to institute a welfare fund for its members.
Ndoma-Egba made the appeal in Calabar when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Mr Jude Okwe, the state correspondent of ThisDay Newspaper.
He said members could draw from such fund to take care of exigencies such as death of members in the course of duty.
The senate leader, who had earlier signed the condolence register at the NUJ Press Centre , was led to the family house of the deceased by officials of the union.
He was received by Okwe’s eldest daughter, Juliana, and the deceased’s brother, Dominic Orim.
Ndoma-Egba asked the children of the diseased to take heart and be assured that he would try his best for and assist them where necessary.
“We should ensure that Jude’s death does not affect the children.’’
Juliana thanked the senate leader for the show of love, as well as he assistance he gave the deceased when he was alive.
She appealed to the senator to continue to relate with the family as he did when Okwe was alive.
