In a shocking move, former Senator Francis Alimikhena Asekhame, a high-profile member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), would officially defect to the APC today, seven days to Edo governorship election.

He would be officially welcomed to the APC  family in Benin at the party’s grand finale rally  at the UNIBEN sport complex.

This unexpected departure has sent shockwaves throughout the political landscape, leaving many to wonder about the implications for the PDP in the state.

The former Senator would be welcomed by: Vice President of Nigeria Senator Kashim Shettima, the Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Chief Jarrett Celestine Tenebe, and all the APC governors that would be present at the grand finale in Benin City.

His departure is a significant loss because of the impact he had had on the PDP’s morale and momentum.

Francis Asekhame Alimikhena (born 20 September 1947) was Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from Edo State.

He served in the Senate from 2015 to 2023, representing Edo North Senatorial District. He was first elected in 2015 and reelected to a second term in 2019.

Alimikhena was the vice-chairman, Senate Committee on Housing, and also a member of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review.
