Sowore Demands N500,000 Minimum Wage for INEC Workers

Sowore

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for a minimum wage of N500,000 for staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Sowore made the demand in a post on his verified X handle while reacting to comments by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, on the welfare of commission staff.

Amupitan had on Tuesday raised concerns over the remuneration of INEC workers, saying they were among the least-paid public servants in the country.

Reacting to the development, Sowore argued that improved pay for electoral officers was necessary for the conduct of credible elections.

He said INEC workers should be adequately compensated for the responsibilities attached to their roles, particularly during election periods.

“No decent wages, no credible elections,” Sowore wrote.

He subsequently called for a N500,000 minimum wage for INEC staff, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
