TETFund to Establish Centres of Excellence for R&D in Nigerian Universities

Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Professor Suleiman Bogoro, has said that the Fund was making plans to establish centres of excellence in research and development in some universities in the country.
Bogoro, who made the disclosure when some journalists paid him a courtesy visit in his office, said this would serve as a model in universities across the continent.
He disclosed that about six countries had come to TETFund to study the model of funding university education, adding that the Fund had stood out as a model in Africa.
Speaking at the background of allegation that the Fund has no working document, Bogoro said: “If we are not being given credit for what we are doing, we should not be crucified”.
He reiterated that the Fund was not awarding any contract for any project in institutions, advising that the reference on unqualified contractors at Abubakar Tafawa Belewa University (ATBU), Bauchi had no relationship with TETFund.
“Let me re-emphasise that TETFund does not award contract, but institutions, adding that budgetary allocation to the Fund is “based on the 2% consolidated revenue from taxes collected from multi-national companies, we are not earning from the Federation Account”, he added.
Bogoro advised the media to be objective in it reportage, stressing that it would be unpleasant for any media to distract him from the focus he had planned for TETFund.
“I am too focused to be distracted by speculations to pull down this institution, TETFund budget is not subject to annual budget from the Federation Account, but prepared directly based on the amount realized from the two per cent tax on companies”, he added.
Bogoro admitted that there were challenges in every aspect of operation in the country, noting that the Fund has adopted a forensic auditing and monitoring of its operation to ascertain areas of needs for reforms.
