Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly embraced Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.
The 33-year-old defender, who plays for Qatar Stars League side Al Ahli, was reported to have converted to Islam in Doha.
The development was reported by Qatari newspaper Al Sharq, which said the Nigeria international recited the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith.
Troost-Ekong was born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father and Dutch mother and represented the Netherlands at youth level before choosing to play for Nigeria at senior level.
He made his Super Eagles debut in 2015 and went on to become one of the team’s prominent defenders, later serving as captain.
Troost-Ekong was part of Nigeria’s squad at several major international tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup.
He currently plays in Qatar after joining Al Ahli, where he continues his club career.
