The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has reminded the international community about the obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, as enshrined in international law.

The statement by the ECOWAS Commission is sequel to the January 3, 2026 arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and wife, Cilia Flores, for running a corrupt, illegitimate government characterised by an extensive drug-trafficking operation that flooded the United States with thousands of tons of cocaine.

“The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has followed with concern recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

“While it recognizes the right of states to fight international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking, ECOWAS wishes to remind the international community about their obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, as enshrined in international law, especially article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter,” ECOWAS said.

ECOWAS further said it fully aligned itself with the statement the African Union issued on January 3, 2026, that called for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela.

“ECOWAS reiterates its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and urges all states to respect the independence and territorial integrity of Venezuela. It expresses support to the people as they shape the future of their country through an inclusive process,” ECOWAS further said.
