Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the appointment of Mallam Usman Aliyu as the Director General of Borno State Agency for Great Green Wall.
The Great Green Wall is an African Union project to combat desertification in the Sahel region and prevent the expansion of the Sahara desert.
The appointment is contained in a statement released on Monday by Abdurrahman Bundi, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Zulum on New Media.
Usman Aliyu graduated from the University of Maiduguri with a BSc in Geology in 2007 and a master’s degree in environmental management in 2015. He is currently pursuing a PhD in environmental management at the same university.
The new DG served as a coordinator under the defunct Federal Ministry of Mineral Resources and Geological Survey in Kano, Borno State Green Hub Africa, Kano State Ministry of Environment, among many other places in the private and public sectors.
Mal. Usman Aliyu hails from Hawul Local Government in the southern part of Borno State. He has received about 20 professional memberships and merit awards, including a Certificate of Excellence from African Clean Up Initiative.
The statement noted that Zulum expects the highest commitment and dedication from the new DG who has an herculean task ahead of him in reversing the challenges of desertification in the sahelean state.
