Argentina captain Lionel Messi, stands on the brink of setting two new records when they play Austria in the 2026 World Cup.

Messi will come up against the European side after netting a sensational hat-trick in their opening fixture against Algeria.

The three goals saw the 38-year-old draw level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the most goals at the World Cup.

If Messi finds the back of the net against Austria, he will now hold the record all by himself.

Another record that the Inter Miami superstar could break is that for most assists.

Messi needs to lay on one more assist for a teammate to own the record alone.
