The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asked the National Assembly to clarify the constitutional basis for President Bola Tinubu’s continued absence from Nigeria.
The opposition party was reacting to reports that Tinubu was on a “working vacation” abroad and argued that the Nigerian Constitution does not recognise such a category of presidential absence.
The ADC said the National Assembly should explain whether the President had formally transmitted a letter to the legislature notifying it of his absence and whether the constitutional requirements had been met.
The party also questioned the extent to which a president can perform his duties from outside the country without formally handing over to the Vice President.
The development comes amid renewed debate over presidential travel and the constitutional provisions governing the transfer of presidential powers when the President is away from Nigeria.
The ADC urged the National Assembly to provide clarity on the matter and ensure that constitutional procedures are followed.
