Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said none of the politicians challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election can improve Nigeria, including his former running mate, Peter Obi.
Baba-Ahmed made the statement while appearing on the Mic On Podcast, where he discussed the 2027 presidential race and the political alternatives to Tinubu.
He advised Tinubu to prepare to leave office at the end of his tenure but argued that the President should not hand over power to any of the major politicians currently seeking to replace him.
According to Baba-Ahmed, the leading opposition figures have, at various times, been associated with political parties and administrations that he believes contributed to Nigeria’s current challenges.
He specifically mentioned Obi, his former political ally, arguing that the former Anambra State governor was previously a member of the Peoples Democratic Party when it was the ruling party.
Baba-Ahmed also claimed that he was different from other major political figures because he had never belonged to a ruling party.
He said he was previously a member of the Congress for Progressive Change but resigned before the party merged with others to form the All Progressives Congress.
“I have never been in a ruling party,” he said, insisting that he never obtained an APC membership card.
The former lawmaker also criticised Tinubu’s administration, accusing the President of weakening political parties during his time in office.
Baba-Ahmed further questioned former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s criticism of Tinubu over issues surrounding the President’s records in the United States.
The 2027 presidential election is expected to feature several prominent political figures as parties and political groups continue to position themselves ahead of the poll.
