Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “alive, strong, and resilient”, dismissing media speculations about the party’s decline.

He reaffirmed that the PDP remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy and is the only surviving original political party since 1998.

Jonathan made the remarks on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja.

The meeting focused on reconciliation within the party and strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Highlighting the party’s historical resilience and institutional strength, Jonathan described the PDP as more than a political platform, calling it a national institution.

“The PDP has been a critical contributor to our democracy since 1999. I have benefited from this party, serving as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and President. I am grateful and remain committed to contributing to its growth,” he said.

The former president urged the party leadership to prioritize national interest and institutional development over personal considerations, emphasizing that strong political parties are essential for democratic stability.

Earlier, Turaki thanked Jonathan for his guidance and loyalty, assuring him that the party is implementing a comprehensive “Rebirth Agenda” aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the PDP.

“Our goal is to return power to the people and reposition the PDP as the party of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging aggrieved members because a united PDP remains the most viable platform for a balanced and prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.
