The Edo Government has commenced the process of modernising the state’s livestock sector with the receipt of 15 bids for the rehabilitation of slaughter slabs and live bird markets.

Mrs. Betsy Ikpikhumi, State Coordinator of the Edo Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (Edo-LPRES), disclosed this during the official bid opening ceremony held on Thursday in Benin City.

Ikpikhumi, who was represented at the event by the project’s Gender Officer, Mr. John McDonald, described the exercise as a significant step toward enhancing livestock infrastructure in the state.

She added that the bids were also for the establishment of additional farmer field schools across the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Edo-LPRES is a World Bank-assisted initiative jointly supported by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Edo Government.

The project is aimed at strengthening and modernising the state’s livestock sector, marking a significant step forward in enhancing livestock infrastructure.

She explained that advertisements for the projects were published in national newspapers to promote transparency and encourage broad participation.

“The scope of these bids includes the rehabilitation of slaughter slabs, live bird markets, and the establishment of additional farmer field schools.

“Our goal is to improve productivity, boost commercialisation, and build resilience within the livestock value chain in Edo,” Ikpikhumi stated.

According to her, the project’s key focus areas include poultry, sheep, goats, and piggery.

She added that all project components—ranging from training to infrastructure and input support—must align with the initiative’s broader development goals.

Ikpikhumi further highlighted that the projects were identified through stakeholder consultations and needs assessments, and were subsequently approved by project partners.

“Following these approvals, advertisements were placed in the Vanguard newspaper, inviting qualified contractors to submit bids.

“The bid opening was conducted publicly, with company representatives present to observe and verify the transparency of the process,” she added.

She disclosed that out of 22 companies that initially expressed interest, 15 successfully submitted complete bids.

The submissions will now be reviewed by an evaluation committee to select the most qualified contractors for project execution.

Mr Abdulbasit Isah, representing RSA Global Investment, praised the process, describing it as fair, open, and transparent.

Among the companies represented at the event included RSA Global Investment, Baube Solution Limited, Airos Synergy Limited, and Jezuwa Nigeria Limited.

Also represented were, Earth Geo Engineering Limited, Attabaaon Global Limited, Crane and Castle Limited, Sea-Hawk Solution & Logistics Limited, Aza-One Multiservices Enterprise Limited, among others.
