Rivers: No Cause for Alarm over Move to Impeach Fubara, Says Rep Agbese

The lawmaker representing Ado, Okpokwu, and Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has weighed in on the political crisis currently rocking Rivers State, saying the situation is manageable and not a cause for alarm.

Agbese’s comments comes amid heightened political tension following the decision by the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whom the lawmakers accused of gross misconduct, including alleged financial misappropriation.

Speaking during an appearance on ARISE News, the federal lawmaker addressed the unfolding impeachment saga, stressing that the developments should not be exaggerated or allowed to destabilize governance in the oil-rich state.

According to Agbese, the crisis is partly a product of political transition, noting that both the governor and several members of the Rivers State House of Assembly recently defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Agbese, who is also the Deputy Spokesman of the House of Reps, argued that some of the tensions being witnessed are remnants of practices and political culture carried over from their former party, rather than a reflection of the values of the APC.

“In our party, we embody exemplary organisation, a strong commitment to peace and tranquility, as well as seamless executive-legislative synergy, as clearly demonstrated at the national level,” Agbese said.

He emphasized the need for political actors in Rivers State to move past old rivalries and embrace the principles of the APC, which he described as anchored on cooperation, stability, and effective governance.

“It is imperative that all political actors relinquish lingering acrimony from their past, wholeheartedly imbibe the enlightened doctrines enshrined in the APC manifesto, and swiftly adapt to foster harmonious governance for the benefit of the people of Rivers State,” he added.

Agbese also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to step in and help resolve the crisis before it escalates further, urging all stakeholders to prioritize peace and development over political disagreements.

“I earnestly implore Mr. President to intervene expeditiously and shepherd all stakeholders toward enduring unity and prosperity. Rivers State deserves, and shall attain, lasting peace,” he said.
