Anambra State Government has tackled former Governor Peter Obi over his claim that he left no debt when he left office.
The state government, in a statement on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said Obi left behind loans, unpaid salaries and pension arrears.
Mefor said they did not want to join issues with Obi before but had to respond after he dared anyone to prove he left debt behind.
According to the government, Obi took eight loans worth $123.7 million from the World Bank and the International Development Association during his two terms as governor.
It said the loans are in Debt Management Office, DMO, records but were not inside the handover notes Obi left for his successor.
The state government said it has been paying those debts for years without making noise.
“This government has been in office for four and a half years and has never complained about any inherited debt, whether borrowings or salary arrears, and has been paying billions of Naira to service them.
“Peter Obi, you do not have to ‘go to a bank or DMO’ before your borrowing can be perfected. All that is required is for you to sign the loan agreements and your government did,” the statement said.
